A Balrog is a mighty spirit a Maia who Morgoth corrupted into his service in the very beginning of Arda, they were in appearence like a man but fire streamed out of them, they could shroud themselves in shadow and induced fear upon any that beheld them, their main weapon is a many thonged whip.

What it was could not be seen: it was like a great shadow, in the middle of which was a dark form, of man-shaped maybe, yet greater; and a power and terror seemed ot be in it and to go before it. The Fellowship of the Rings; The Bridge of Khazad-dûm
