Then said Tuor: "What be those names?" And the chief of the Guard made answer:"Tis said and 'tis sung: ' Gondobar am I called Gondothlibar, City of Stone and City of Dwellers in Stone; Gondolin the Stone of Song and Gwarestrin am I named, Tower of Guard, Gar Thurion or the Secret Place, for I am hidden from the eyes of Melko; but they who love me most greatly call me Loth, for like a flower am I, even Lothengriol the flower that blooms on the plain.' he said, "in our daily speech we speak and name it mostly Gondolin."

The defences of the city consisted of seven different gates, each wrought of a different material. The first one was the made of wood, the second one of stone, the third of bronze, the fourth of (writhen) iron, the fifth of silver, the sixth of gold and the seventh(which was made by Maeglin after Nirnaeth) gate was made out of iron. The city of Gondolin was destroyed by the host of Morgoth on the eve of the feast of the Gates of Summer.
