Description:
This is not an anthology of "fanfic", but rather a collection of tales by "name" authors in the field of science fiction and high fantasy, all charged with producing an original story which at the same time is in some way evocative of Tolkien's work. Submissions from writers including Gregory Benford, Stephen Donaldson, Charles de Lint and Terry Pratchett represent a variety of speculative fiction genres; and while some are certainly enjoyable (that, of course, is a matter of personal taste), there is very little here that is recognizably Tolkienesque. And no Tolkien-inspired cyberpunk (though Benford's "Down the River Road" comes close)!
