Ar-Pharazôn

Pharazôn, son of Gimilkhâd born in the year 3118, became the mightiest and last King of Númenor. His rule lasted for 64 years following his seizure of the Sceptre of Rule in 3255 from Míriel, daughter of Tar-Palantir 'The Far-Sighted?', last King of the Faithful. He achieved his rule following the death of Tar-Palantir by taking the reluctant Míriel as his wife, and taking over the Sceptre in place of Tar-Míriel, who ought to have become fourth Queen of Númenor. He was known as Ar-Pharazôn the Golden, his name in Quenya was Tar-Calion?, but this was never used by him.

The rule of this usurper was driven by greed and a dreadful, insatiable lust for power. It was said of him that 'no less than the kingship of the world was his desire' and yet his lust proved to be his downfall and that of all Númenor.

His pride led him to contest with Sauron power over Middle-earth, and to take Sauron back to Númenor as a prisoner. Seduced by his pride and lust for power and by Saurons lies, he led a fleet to attempt to capture Valinor and its supposed immortality for himself. Upon his landing on the shores of Aman, the Valar laid down their guardianship and called upon Eru, who changed the shape of the world, including the utter destruction of Númenor.
