The defences of the city consisted of seven different gates, each wrought of a different material. The first one was the made of wood, the second one of stone, the third of bronze, the fourth of (writhen) iron, the fifth of silver, the sixth of gold and the seventh(which was made by Maeglin after Nirnaeth) gate was made out of iron.
The city of Gondolin was destroyed by the host of Morgoth on the eve of the feast of the Gates of Summer.
