Hildifons Took

1244-? S.R. (Shire Reckoning)

Son of Gerontius Took, The Old Took. Said to have gone on a journey and never returned.

Like his brother Isengar Took, Hildifons is mentioned in a brief entry to the Tookish Family Tree (LotR, appendix C) and like his brother he is more than likely a playful reference on Professor Tolkien's part to the following passage from The Hobbit.

"Not the Gandalf who was responsible for so many quiet lads and lasses going off into the Blue for mad adventures. Anything from climbing trees to visiting Elves - or sailing in ships, sailing to other shores! Bless me, life used to be quite inter - I mean, you used to upset things badly in these parts once upon a time. I beg your pardon, but I had no idea you were still in business."
The Hobbit - An Unexpected Party.

Sadly, if young Hildifons was one of these quiet hobbit lads that went off into the blue, there is no mention of his return, and we are left to guess, as with so many things in Tolkien's work, as to just what his eventual fate was.
