House of Bëor

The First House of the Edain.

"A darkness lies behind us, and we have turned our backs upon it, and we do not desire to return thither even in thought. Westward our hearts have been turned, and we believe that there we shall find Light."-- Bëor

This House of Men was found by King Finrod Felagund, the first of the Calaquendi to encounter the Second Race. Felagund was called by Bëor's men Nóm, Wisdom, and his people Nómin (hence the Gnomes of the Lost Tales).

The Green Elves of Ossiriand did not wish strangers in their land, and urged Felagund to persuade the Men to leave. Bëor led his people to the lands of Amrod and Amras, across the Gelion. When Felagund returned to Nargothrond, Bëor went with him, earning his name Bëor, meaning vassal in the language of his people (his former name had been Balan).

Bëor died from old age, within less time than the Eldar called a "LongYear". This shocked and grieved them, forcing them to ponder the strange fate of Men.

In appearance, the House of Bëor had dark or brown hair and grey eyes. They were most like the Noldor, and loved by them. They were eager of mind, cunning-handed, swift in understanding, long in memory, and moved to pity rather than laughter.
