Isil

Quenya name for the moon.

Comments and Annotations

Isildur and Anárion ruled Gondor, from MinasIthil and MinasAnor, respectively. The cities were named for their shape; MinasIthil pitched like the West side of the Cascade Mountains in Oregon and Washington, to catch the setting moon under dark trees. But MinasAnor, on the knee of a mountain leaning towards the East, would catch the full blaze of the rising sun every morning.

But Isildur and Anárion were named when they lived on the island of Westernesse. Presumably the names Ithilien and ANorien were named after the territories they ruled.
