Moria

Greatest of all the mansions of the Dwarves, situated under the MistyMountains. Khazad-dûm. Also BlackPit, Dwarrowdelf and Hadhodrond.

The mines of Moria, they had gates on the eastern and western side of the MistyMountains. The eastern gate is called DimrillGate, the western gate HollinGate. From the western gate ran a high-road to Ost-in-Edhil, the city of the Elves, and a friendship arose there between Dwarves and Elves, such as has never elsewhere been, to the enrichment of both peoples.

The HollinGate was shut when Eregion was laid waste by Sauron.

Comments and Annotations

Entering the DimrillGate, an attacker would meet a formidable defense. The only passage to the city of Moria proper ran over the Bridge of Khazad-dûm; a long narrow span over a huge abyss.

Ironically, Gandalf used this defense (during FotR) to keep an enemy in Moria.
