Purist

A purist, or Tolkien purist, is someone who considers Tolkien's work as the Middle-earth canon, and shouldn't be desecrated by others. The purist hates or is totally cold towards fan fiction.

The term came to be used widely since the movies came out: The purist dislikes the LotR films made by Peter Jackson (more rarely - also the cartoons), or at least strongly critisise them for certain scenes, e.g. Arwen at the Ford of Bruinen instead of Glorfindel or Elves in {{Helm's Deep}}. This term often refers to people who do not like the filmmakers' deviating from the books or even refuse to watch the films at all.

However, many who consider themselves purists do not reject the films and, understanding that perfection is impossible, enjoy them. After all, they think that Tolkien would approve some logical changes made for a movie's shake, as he expresses in his Letters.
