Eorl

The First King of the Mark of Rohan.

Eorl succeeded his father Léod as Lord of the Éothéod while still a youth. For this reason he was called Eorl the Young. Eorl gained fame for taming Felaróf, the sire of the legendary Mearas, the white horse "princes" of Rohan. In the year 2509, Eorl's cavalry answer to the plea from Steward Cirion of Gondor and rode to the rescue of the Men of Gondor from certain defeat at the Battle of Celebrant. In gratitude, the Steward of Gondor gave his allies the province of Calenardohon which was renamed Rohan, meaning HorseLand?.

Eorl dwelt at Aldburg in eastern Rohan, and ruled as King from 2510 until 2545, when, at the age of sixty years, he was slain in battle against the Easterlings in the Wold.
