Ogden

A Hobbit family name.

Tolkien seems to have pondered to mention it in "A Long-expected Party" ("And my dear Tooks, and Grubbs, and Chubbs, and Burroweses, and Ogdens, and Boffinses, and Proudfoots."), but struck out the name almost certainly at the time of writing (HoMeVI).

Comments and Annotations

On an - IMO - interesting and funny sidenote it should be mentioned that C.K. Ogden was a linguist and philologist (Basic English, The Meaning of Meaning, etc.), whose theories of language and its development have been refuted or rejected by Owen Barfield - one of the Inklings - in his book Poetic Diction, which seems to have influenced Tolkien (c.f. The Inklings, Splintered Light, "On Fairy-stories").
