Orodruin
(redirection from Mount Doom)

The Fire-Mountain?, MountDoom, AmonAmarth.

...Cracks of Doom...

...last combat on the slopes of Orodruin...

...where Gil-galad and Elendil died...and Narsil broke...Elrond and Círdan stood near...

...and Sauron was overtrown...and Isildur cut the OneRing from his hand...

As a fire spirit and a former pupil of Aulë, Sauron likes forges. As a fallen Maiar he likes smoke, shadow, and destructive flame. Sauron chose Mordor for his domain and his laboratory. His power extends to Orodruin's source, so he can control its output to his needs. Normal volcanos erupt sporadically; Sauron has tuned Orodruin to a chronic low-grade eruption that keeps the already black-colored land of Mordor in a constant overcast.

During warfare Sauron can invest more energy changing the weather, and so can send out the smoke from Orodruin, keeping the sun off his orcs and his opponents dismayed.

Orodruin's furnace, the SammathNaur, created the OneRing, and Sauron invested in the Ring his own ability to withstand change. Hence the only thing that can un-make the Ring is the furnace that created it.

A note about the literature; Tolkien prefers old English words with Nordic origins over Latin or new words. Hence, we never hear the words "Volcano", "lava", "fumarole", "magma", etc. From the hobbits' limited education, lava appears as "slow rivers of fire".
