Eärendil

Quenya: ocean-friend or sea-lover, also Evening-star and Morning-star (=Venus)

Eärendil (1)

Adan, son of Tuor and Idril. Born in Gondolin he was soon brought to Arvernien, there he became friends with Círdan and later Lord of Arvernien and married Elwing, the elven Princess of Doriath. Father of Elrond and Elros. Came to Aman as the first mortal, gained the mercy and support of the Valar for the people of Beleriand and was placed with his ship Vingilot and a Silmaril in the sky as the EveningStar?

With him on the journey to Aman were three mariners: Falathar, Erellont and Aerandir. They never set foot on the land of Aman. But there were the only Mortals to see the BlessedRealm and survive to tell the tale. Eönwë came to them in the Bay of Eldamar and took them from there ship Vingilot and placed them on a new ship and sent them home.

The story of Eärendil is one of the oldest in the Silmarillion, the first versions date back as far as 1914 and probably represent Tolkien's first step into his own Mythology. (c.f Mythology/Éarendel)
